St. John’s Cathedral is a historic church located on Garden Road, Central, the oldest Western-style church building in Hong Kong and the only land in Hong Kong held in the form of permanent title.
I visited St. John’s Cathedral last Saturday and was very interested in the architectural style and historical background of the church. The Cathedral was laid in 1847, completed and ordained in 1849, and the Surveying Director Jeep Perry was involved in designing its architectural plans. The church adopts Gothic architectural style, mainly composed of three main buildings, namely the cathedral itself, the sub-cathedral and the office building.
The interior of the church is simple and solemn, with seats dedicated to the bishop, seats dedicated to the priests of law and politics and the chaplain of the church, and seats of the congregation bearing the British royal emblem. There are also monuments and plaques in the church, which record important figures and events, such as British soldiers and civilians killed in the defense of Hong Kong during the Second World War, and Hong Kong’s first Chinese bishop, Cheng Zhenxu.
